Education Reflection - 775 Words

After being in school for 14 years I have learned a lot about the world around me, myself, and other people. One of the more fascinating things about education is how it can make you more aware of yourself and the world around you. When I think of the word â€Å"education† my first thoughts are about math and science, but after I consider everything I have gained from my education I am more apt to think of how my education has molded my character and shaped my outlook on daily experiences. As an engineering student, the majority of my classes focus on math and sciences. However there is one class outside of engineering that has truly opened up my mind and forced me to look at things from a different perspective. Intro to Gender Studies has†¦show more content†¦I have become much more apt to acknowledge where there might be a problem in society, being aware that I might be apart of that problem. They say that the first step is to admit that there is a problem, and the class really allowed me to find the problem as well as give me skills to address the problem. There were a few times during the class that I wanted to, and sometimes did, roll my eyes. It took a few days for me to even realize that I was doing this, and once it came to my attention I made a conscious effort to refrain from expressing myself like that. I had to stop myself from letting my negative opinions show through my body language, and I realized I simply needed to stop having that reaction to someone’s opinion. It is a difficult task to welcome an opposing opinion, but that is a skill I realized needed improving. I now am more willing to accept the thoughts of someone that thinks differently than I do, and even let them change my mind. As a headstrong woman, I was pretty well set in my ways. I now am willing to take a look at what I believe and recognize that there are other acceptable ideas. I was taught a certain set of principles in my childhood, and this class chal lenged a lot of what I believed to be right. Being exposed to new view points and being able to discuss, rather than argue them, has made me more accepting and understanding.
